In touch with ice and snow in summer
Visiting Diavolezza in Engadine in Switzerland

Diavolezza/Switzerland (2017) – Yes, it gets hot in summer, I get that. But that hot?
Somebody has to talk to a responsible otherwise we will soon all run for the mountains where temperatures still can be endured. By the way: there is literally nothing cooler than to be at a glacier on a hot August summer day. Trust me, I've checked it out this year, while on a journey through the Engadine valley with the "Trainino Rosso" in Switzerland. If there is any desire in you to see a glacier from up close, but you don't want to hike a mountain for hours, this would be a perfect place to go. The famous little red train, which made a name for itself as the highest railway crossing in Europe, conveniently stops on his run through the Val Bernina in Bernina-Diavolezza. Next to the train station in walking distance is the cable car which takes you within a few minutes about thousand meters (3,280ft) higher up to the Diavolezza "Berghaus" (Refuge Diavolezza). And there you are, only a stone throw away from the massive amount of snow and ice and an incredible panorama which you won't find so easy anywhere else. Since you're probably not going to hike the highest peaks of the Eastern Alps, the Piz Bernina and the Vadret Pers, nor most likely one of the other graceful towering mountains in front of you, the Piz Palü, Bellavista, Piz Cambrena, Piz Trovat, the Munt Pers or the Piz Morteratsch, just take a seat at the wonderful "Berghaus", order some Swiss local food special, like a cheese fondue with a Bernina beer and enjoy the
incredible panoramic view at 3.000 meter above meter above sea level (2.978 m/9770 ft).
Observe and take all the beauty in the eight peaks near the 4000-meter-mark towering
over the scenery of the Bernina Range in the Alps of eastern Switzerland offer to you.
If you are up to it, there are many possibilities to hike around up there. For example to Europe's highest barbeque grill. You will have to carry up your own meat though and you will be on your
own cooking it also. Just a friendly warning. From October on this area is highly frequented
by the world best skiers who come up to the Diavolezza for training runs. This is only possible
since the snow from the year before is carefully packed and covered over the summer
and will be spread out in the beginning of the trainings season.
