The little harbor of Portofino in Italy

Portofino – Sparkling gem of the Italian Riviera
The rich and famous, love and heartbreak

Portofino/Italy (2012) – The rich and the famous discovered the beautiful little fishing village Portofino in the late 19th century and turned it into one of the most exclusive locations on the Ligurian coast in Italy. Since the 1950’s famous Hollywood stars and members of the European royal families were regular guests in this picturesque little hamlet at the Italian Riviera. Some of them came year after year for their little getaway. While these celebrities gave Portofino the exclusive touch, musicians attached the romance, love and heartbreak image to this lovely city. Italian singer Fred Buscaglione and Andrea Bocelli as well as beautiful Italian-French singer Dalida , they all serenade "I found love in Portofino". Engelbert Humperdinck was one of those who suffered a heartbreak in " Portofino ". Another famous singer has an even closer relationship to this place, Rod Stewart confirmed his love in Portofino, he got married there on board of a yacht.
Portofino impresses at first sight
I was fortunate to see Portofino on my journey to the Italian Riviera this summer. I have to admit, after experiencing this wonderful place, I kind of get it, why the rich and the famous had picked Portofino for their annual getaway. The tiny picturesque half-moon shaped seaside village with its pastel houses lining the shore of the harbor really knows how to impress at first sight. Especially when coming from the seaside, like I came by ship from Santa Margherita and was blown away from this incredible scenery which was offered to me.

There is so much to see in Portofino. The harbor itself looks like a painting with all the boats and yachts anchored. There are countless shops, restaurants, cafes and of course luxury hotels to find and how could it be any different, also quite a lot of day tourists. You can't miss "Castello Brown" up on the hill, a 16th century castle which was turned into a museum with a fantastic view of the harbor and the Mediterranean Sea. By the way Portofino is not only known for love finding or heart breaking but also for its crystalline green water.
