Castel dell'Ovo in Naples, fortress & former royal residence

More than 900 churches add to Rome's beauty Raphael, Caravaggio and Michelangelo

Rome/Italy (2018) – Rome is full of churches and they clearly are for everybody an amazing contribution to the beauty of the city. There are more than 900 of them, some are representing other countries and most of them are Roman Catholic churches or basilicas. Even though St. Peter's in Vatican City might be the most famous one, the official cathedral of Rome and the seat of the bishop of Rome, which is the pope, is San Giovanni in Laternano (St. John Lateran). It's one of the four great basilicas in Rome, built in the 4th century AD,  the first church of the popes and one of the oldest Catholic churches of Rome. The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is the largest of the churches in Rome and one of the most beautiful ones, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The basilica is also one of the oldest churches in Rome, built around 440 and is a fully loaded treasure chest. And then there is Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, this gorgeous basilica sits on the ruins of three ancient Roman temples, one built for the Roman Goddess Minerva, one for the Egyptian Goddess Isis and one for the Greco-Egyptian God Serapis. And not to forget the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, which is loaded with the works of the famous Renaissance artists Pinturicchio, Raphael, Bernini and Caravaggio. One of the greatest masterpieces of Italian art is to find in the Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli (St. Peter in chains), Michelangelo's Moses. The church, which was built in the 5th century, also houses the relic of St. Peter's chains when he was imprisoned in Jerusalem.
